Do QR Codes Expire? The Honest Answer for Static and Dynamic Codes
A QR code is a pattern of squares, and a pattern cannot expire. What can expire is whatever sits on the other end of it — and that is where people get caught out.
Static Codes Hold the Data Themselves
A static QR code stores its information right in the pattern — a link, a phone number, a WiFi password. Nothing about that pattern decays. On clean, protected print it scans years from now exactly as it does today.
When a static code seems to "expire," the pattern is almost never at fault. The page it points to was deleted, the link changed, or a password was reset. The code still decodes to the same address; that address just leads nowhere now.
Dynamic Codes Depend on a Service
A dynamic code points at a short redirect owned by a provider, which forwards each scan to your real destination. That lets you change the target without reprinting — but the code now lives and dies with that account and that company.
Watch the free-trial trap: some "free" dynamic generators disable the redirect after a couple of weeks unless you pay, which can kill a thousand printed flyers on the same afternoon. The codes generated here are static, so there is nothing to expire and no subscription to keep alive.
